Alisa Chalmers received her BA from Boston University and then worked briefly as a technician at City College of CUNY under Dr. Karen Hubbard. Afterwards, she traveled to Japan to pursue her graduate education in primate studies under the guidance of Dr. Juichi Yamagiwa in the Laboratory of Human Evolution Studies at Kyoto University.
She joined the Melnick lab in 2010 and began her work with Dr. Maria Figueroa. By looking at epigenomic signatures common in patients with acute myeloid leukemia, she worked with Dr. Figueroa to further identify genes involved in the development of blood cancer. She now works with Dr. Rita Shaknovich on projects elucidating epigenetic mechanisms involved in malignant transformation of mature B-cells.
Alisa is a past Monbukagakusho scholarship recipient and enjoys learning new techniques used in biomedical research. In her spare time, she likes to travel and read fiction.
